feat(egocap): optional task details alongside the task - #1446
Lets the operator attach optional free-text details (props, grasp, scene) to the task.
UI: "Edit task" now has a second field, "Details (optional)", saved together with the task (Enter saves, Escape cancels from either field). Details show under the task in the operator status bar and as a "Details:" fact in the recording panel.
Wire:set_task takes an optional string details; the recording snapshot carries task_details. The frontend treats a snapshot without it as "no details", so an older backend keeps working. The backend rejects details over 1000 characters.
Data: details are frozen into each take at start (like the task) and written to the episode metadata as task_details, and to the recovery manifest (task_details, default "", so older manifests still read). task_description / instruction_language are untouched, since downstream readers key on them.
A timed-out save only counts as applied when the next snapshot shows both the task and the details.
Testing
Run locally from examples/egocap/:
Frontend npm run test: 20 files, 263 tests passed. npm run lint (tsc -b --noEmit): clean.
Backend tests/backend: all pass except 3 "file name that is not valid UTF-8" tests, which macOS cannot create (unrelated, same as on main).
tests/recording_service could not run on macOS (47 fixture errors, /proc is Linux-only), so the new task_details write into the episode metadata is not exercised by a local test; it was checked end to end only through the backend wire (set_task with details returns task_details in the snapshot).
ruff check / ruff format --check and pre-commit on the diff: clean.
The operator can attach free-text details (props, grasp, scene) to the task.
They are edited and saved with the task, shown in the status bar and recording
panel, carried by set_task, frozen into each take at start and written to the
episode metadata as task_details. task_description is unchanged, since readers
key on it.

Walkthrough
The recording interface now supports task details alongside task text. The frontend sends details with set_task, and the backend validates, stores, and returns them in snapshots. The recording service writes details to episode manifests and finalized episode metadata. Older snapshots and manifests without task details use an empty string.

🤖 Automated first-pass review (Claude, for Dejun) — I'll follow up personally where needed.
Summary — This PR adds optional free-text task details. set_task accepts details (up to 1000 chars) and the snapshot carries task_details. The coordinator freezes the details into each take, and they are written to the recovery manifest and the episode metadata as task_details. In the UI there is a second editor field, a line in the operator bar and a status fact. The plumbing is clean and the wire is well tested. One blocker: the labels added in the second commit contradict the metadata keys those fields write to.
The field labelled "Task name" is written as task_description and instruction_language (recording_service.py:1026). The station YAML's meta.task_description pre-fills it (app.py:311).
The field labelled "Task description (optional)", with the placeholder "Describe the task: what to do, …", is written as task_details (:1029).
The task catalogs use the repo's own vocabulary: Task Name is the lower_snake id, Task Description is the instruction, and props and grasps are separate columns (data/taskfiles/README.md:17).
Operators follow labels. The instruction will likely end up in task_details, which consumers of task_description/instruction_language never read, and short names will likely end up in the instruction field.
Fix: keep the first field as the instruction (e.g. "Task"), call the new one "Details (optional)" with a placeholder like "Props, grasp, scene", and show "Details:" in the status line. That is what the PR description and every identifier already say. Then update the four tests at RecordingPanel.test.tsx:450–503. If someone asked for these labels, the PR and the operator docs must state which label maps to which key instead. The mapping is certain from the code. Whether operators actually put text in the wrong field is a judgment call, but the fix is two strings.
Suggestions
styles.css:1333 — --text-muted is never defined (:root only has --text-main and --text-secondary). The declaration is dropped and the details line inherits the main text colour. Use var(--text-secondary).
test_recording_session.py:284 — this round-trip test runs the real coordinator → RecordingService → Zarr path, and it is in tests/backend, which you ran. Calling set_task("t", "left hand") and asserting group.attrs["task_details"] == "left hand" covers the metadata write the description says is untested. A voice test with committed details would cover the other new branch (RecordingPanel.tsx:492).
recording_session.py:418 — pass the details by keyword, and consider naming the service parameter task_details (recording_service.py:230) to match the context, manifest and attribute. #1437 edits both files, and a positional third argument shifts silently if either side adds a parameter.
These comments no longer match the code:
recordingTypes.ts:70 still calls taskText "the only task-related fact this component renders or edits".
recording_command.py:453 — whitespace-only task text is rejected, but whitespace-only details are kept as-is. They show as a blank line in the bar and as " " in the metadata. Consider normalising them to "". If you do, the reducer's uncertain-save check must compare the normalised draft.
styles.css:774 — .recording-status-details has no CSS rule. Give it the same flex-basis: 100%; overflow-wrap: anywhere as .recording-status-task so a long unbroken string can't overflow the panel.
Conflicts
With main: the local 3-way merge has no conflicts. The branch is 6 commits behind and does not need a rebase. GitHub's blocked state comes from branch protection, not from a conflict.
#1426 (gareth-morgan-nv) shares recording_session.py, App.operatorLayout.test.tsx and styles.css, with no textual conflict. RecordingSnapshot.taskDetails is now required, so any snapshot literal that #1426 adds will fail tsc once this lands. Whoever merges second adds taskDetails: "" and re-runs npm run lint.
#1437 (gareth-morgan-nv) targets gmorgan/Argus, so conflicts were not computed. It shares recording_session.py and recording_service.py, which is the start_episode path this PR changes. Re-check it when it is retargeted to main. The keyword-argument change above removes the main risk.

Thanks for the review. Pushed fixes for every suggestion: details passed by keyword and the service parameter renamed task_details; whitespace-only details trimmed to "" (the reducer compares the trimmed draft); --text-muted replaced with --text-secondary; .recording-status-details now wraps; stale comments and the set_task docstring updated; new tests for the Zarr task_details round trip, whitespace details, and a voice save with committed details.
On the labels (must-fix): these were chosen deliberately, so I kept them rather than reverting. The field labelled Task name is the instruction text and is stored as task_description / instruction_language; the field labelled Task description (optional) is free-text context stored as task_details. Operators should put the instruction in the first field. If you would rather the UI match the stored keys, the alternative is "Task" / "Details (optional)" (about two strings and four tests), so say the word.
