egocap: stream Orin cameras over LiveKit to the PC, with preview and recording - #1426
Streams camera video from a separate Jetson Orin (which only captures, encodes and publishes) to the PC over LiveKit, with the PC owning CaptureServer, the egocap backend, recording and the browser.
Stream registry: CaptureServer lists LiveKit cameras (LiveKitCameraStream, kind 3) in the existing SessionInit.streams, from a --livekit-streams YAML file. Old clients reject the new kind; the wire is unchanged when no LiveKit stream is configured. CaptureServer never joins the room.
Browser preview: the backend issues subscribe-only tokens (GET /api/livekit-token); the browser joins LiveKit directly and shows one tile per stream. Several head cameras are shown at equal size; other (wrist) cameras are smaller.
Recording: the backend joins the room as a recorder and feeds frames into a take through the existing ingress and lifecycle. Only a stream whose timestamps are a sensor capture time is recorded; any other stream refuses recording by name instead of recording a guessed time.
Orin publisher:camera_plugin_sensing (src/plugins/sensing) captures GMSL cameras with SIPL, encodes H.264 on the Jetson hardware encoder and publishes one track per camera. It carries a per-frame id, an application timestamp and the raw SIPL capture counter. The Jetson encoder does not return the timestamp it is given, so units are paired with captures by submission order (bounded in-flight queue).
Emulator:examples/egocap/tools/livekit_orin_emulator.py publishes test-pattern tracks with the same metadata, so the PC side can run without an Orin.
Docs:examples/egocap/LIVEKIT_PREVIEW.md (PC runbook) and the Orin build/run section of src/plugins/sensing/README.md.
Known limits
Recording from the real Orin is refused: the sender publishes processing time, not a sensor capture time. SIPL's capture counter is documented as raw ticks, and no counter-to-host-clock mapping is implemented. The counter is carried as capture_tsc (unscaled).
Clock agreement between the Orin and the PC is not validated; the recorder only rejects grossly stale or future frames.
If the Jetson encoder silently drops a frame, later frames carry the wrong capture's metadata until the in-flight cap trims the queue.
Dev LiveKit keys and plain ws:// signalling were used for the Orin run; production needs wss:// and real keys.

Testing
Backend, capture-server and tool tests for this feature: 299 passed; frontend vitest 318 passed; tsc --noEmit, ruff check and ruff format --check clean (run on 2641bb7c8; later commits are Jetson sources, docs, the emulator's stamp ordering and the equal-size head layout, with their tests written afterwards and only the layout test run).
Real local end to end: emulator, local LiveKit server, CaptureServer, backend; a recording take was kept with LiveKit video.
On an AGX Orin (two SHW5G cameras, 2560x1984, 30 fps, H.264): the publisher built and ran, publishing about 2,100 frames per track with none replaced; the PC page then showed the video in a browser.
Not run: the repository's full pre-commit (a pre-existing untracked examples/egocap/recordings/ directory and unrelated license lines fail the REUSE hook locally), and the full C++ build off the Orin.
Added LiveKit camera previews alongside existing camera feeds, with connection and video status indicators.
Added support for recording eligible LiveKit streams when capture timestamps and video dimensions are available. Streams that do not meet these requirements remain available for preview but cannot be recorded.
Added an optional Jetson SENSING camera plugin for publishing camera video to LiveKit, plus a synthetic video publisher for testing.
Documentation
Added setup guides for LiveKit preview, recording constraints, and the Jetson SENSING plugin.
Bug Fixes
Improved recording support for decoded video frames and their queue size accounting.

Walkthrough
This change adds LiveKit camera stream metadata and browser preview support to egocap. The backend issues viewer tokens and can receive eligible LiveKit frames for recording. CaptureServer loads and advertises configured streams, while the browser connects to LiveKit and renders matching tracks. The change also adds an optional Jetson SENSING plugin that captures SIPL frames, converts and encodes them, and publishes H.264 tracks. An emulator and tests cover the stream, preview, recording, and publisher paths.

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review 52f57
Camera frame timing from the Orin publisher can drift from real capture time, and a recording take can hang or stall silently when a LiveKit reader or room operation misbehaves. The Jetson build instructions and offline build path also need fixing. Address these before merging; none is a data-loss or security blocker.

🤖 Automated first-pass review (Claude, for Dejun) — I'll follow up personally where needed.
Summary — This PR adds LiveKit cameras end to end. CaptureServer offers them as a new SessionInit.streams kind (3), read from a --livekit-streams YAML file. The backend issues subscribe-only tokens and can record streams stamped with a capture time through the existing take lifecycle. The browser previews the video directly, and a new Jetson camera_plugin_sensing (SIPL → NVENC → pre-encoded tracks) and a Python emulator publish it. The Python and TypeScript side is careful and well tested. Two things should change before merge: the recording ingress budget was sized for JPEGs, not decoded frames, and the protocol and setup docs the description promises are not in the PR.
Must fix
examples/egocap/backend/egocap_web/app.py:87 — the raw ingress budget is 64 MiB. Its comment (L76) says it holds "seconds" of JPEGs, but it now also carries decoded LiveKit frames. At 2560x1984 (the streams-file example and the Orin run) one RGB frame is ~15 MB, so only four fit: about 70 ms of consumer stall with two 30 fps streams. recording_adapter.py:467 treats that overflow as a failed take, so ordinary writer back-pressure will likely interrupt takes. Two more gaps in the memory accounting: _INGRESS_RESERVED_BYTES still reserves one 8 MiB JPEG for the item held live, and the receiver's queues (livekit_receiver.py:33, up to 24 decoded frames per stream with the SDK's own queue) sit outside the 256 MiB budget. The real Orin can't hit this yet because its streams are refused, but the emulator at Orin geometry can, and so can any sender that stamps capture time. Size queue_bytes and the reservation from the recordable LiveKit geometry (the decoded queue already is), keep the receiver queues inside the budget, fix the comment, and add a full-size test.
The docs for the wire change and the PC setup are missing. capture_server/README.md:578 is the protocol reference and still lists only StreamKind 1–2. It needs the kind-3 fields, LiveKitTimestampBasis, the fact that older clients reject a session offering kind 3, and the --livekit-streams flag and YAML format. The description names examples/egocap/LIVEKIT_PREVIEW.md as the PC runbook, but that file is not in the diff. Nothing in the repo explains how to write the streams file, create the join token the Orin or emulator publishes with, or run the emulator. Also, backend/README.md:54 says the key pair only signs viewer tokens, but app.py:124 also signs the recorder's token, and LiveKit recording won't start without it.
Suggestions
Several comments on the Orin timestamp path contradict pairing by order:
sipl_camera.hpp:76 says the stamp round-trips through the encoder and identifies units.
video_track_sink.hpp:24 says the transport timestamp is CLOCK_MONOTONIC at capture, but livekit_video_output.cpp:350 sends the encoder's own numbering. FrameMeta::stamp_us (L375) is set but never read. Sending it would keep the transport timeline real when frames are paced out (verify).
jetson_encoder.cpp:218 — the encoder is opened with default, likely blocking, flags (L117). So dqBuffer(…, 0) probably waits instead of dropping, and encoder_busy never counts. Please verify, or open the encoder with O_NONBLOCK.
livekit_video_output.cpp:323 — the in-flight cap limits how far metadata can drift after an encoder-internal drop, but never realigns it: a single drop shifts every later frame_id/capture_tsc by one. The description's Known limits suggest the cap clears it. A drop detector would help before #1437 builds on these fields.
app.py:243 — one stream that can't be recorded (today, any real-Orin stream) blocks every recording on the station, tracking and JPEG included. This is intended, but a per-stream record: false would make preview-only an explicit setting.
server.py:1815 — a LiveKit name that matches a JPEG camera name is only rejected when a client parses SessionInit. Check it at load or in ServerConfig.__post_init__ (L169). Similarly, the wire allows several rooms, but the browser joins only offered[0]'s room (useLiveKitPreview.ts:60) and the recorder raises. check_livekit_streams could require a single URL, room and publisher.
livekit_recording.py:12 — nothing enforces the assumption that the backend and CaptureServer share a host. Refuse LiveKit recording when EGOCAP_CAPTURE_SERVER_URL isn't loopback, or document it.
core/CMakeLists.txt:42 — the C++ sources call the CUDA runtime and driver APIs but link neither CUDA::cudart nor CUDA::cuda_driver. Linking them should make the raw flags in sensing/README.md:60 unnecessary. Also drop the personal home-directory search path at sensing/CMakeLists.txt:99.
Nits:
.gitignore:100 ignores personal tooling; .git/info/exclude is the place for that.
sensing/README.md:76 ("fix the failure at the file it names") reads like an instruction to an agent.
livekit is now a hard dependency that the backend imports at startup (pyproject.toml:40). An optional extra with a lazy import would avoid that.
test_livekit_streams.py:175 uses a private-range IPv4 address. It is generic, so not blocking, but an RFC 5737 documentation address wouldn't read like a lab host.
Conflicts
With main: the PR is 2 commits behind and the local 3-way merge is clean; no rebase needed.
With open PRs:
#1078 (jiwenc-nv) has textual conflicts in CMakeLists.txt, src/plugins/CMakeLists.txt and src/plugins/sensing/CMakeLists.txt (×2), and also adds the sensing plugin build. #998 (jiwenc-nv) carries its own copies of sipl_camera.*, sensing_camera.*, jetson_encoder.*, app/main.cpp and plugin.yaml, so two versions of the same plugin are in flight. Agree a landing order with jiwenc-nv; whoever lands second rebases and reconciles.
#1409 (same author) has textual conflicts in protocol.py and server.py; land them one after the other.
#1153, #1407 and #960 (draft) each conflict on one line next to the plugin options in the two root CMake files. Whoever lands second has a trivial fix.
Stack: #1428 targets this branch, and #1429, #1437 and #1440 sit above it; they need retargeting after merge. #1342 (draft), #1340 and #1405 look like earlier versions of parts of this PR; close them or mark them superseded if so.
Change-by-change (69 files)
Skimmed rather than read line by line: the middle of sipl_camera.cpp (SIPL bring-up and buffer registration), yuv_to_rgba.cu, the frontend test bodies and both lockfiles.

Ingress budget. The raw-ingress queue bound is now the base allowance plus decoded LiveKit frames sized from the recordable streams' geometry (6 frames per stream; two 2560x1984 streams give 12 frames, about 400 ms of stall at 30 fps, up from about 4). The reservation for the item held live is the larger of a JPEG and the biggest LiveKit frame. The receiver's own queues were shrunk and are now counted in the take's budget, so the total is no longer a flat 256 MiB when LiveKit is recorded. The comment is rewritten, and tests cover full-size frames against ordinary back-pressure.
Docs. The protocol reference documents StreamKind 3, LiveKitTimestampBasis, that older clients reject a session offering kind 3, and --livekit-streams with its YAML format. examples/egocap/LIVEKIT_PREVIEW.md is the PC runbook (streams file, publisher token, emulator, preview and recording). The backend README now says the key pair also signs the recorder's token.
Suggestions
Stale Orin timestamp comments: corrected in sipl_camera.hpp, jetson_encoder.hpp and .cpp, livekit_video_output.*, and livekit/CMakeLists.txt (H.264 units, not NV12).
livekit_video_output.cpp:350: the transport timestamp is now the capture stamp from FrameMeta::stamp_us. Unbuilt, because it needs a Jetson.
Encoder opened without O_NONBLOCK: not changed. It probably blocks, so the busy-drop path may never fire, but opening it non-blocking also changes the other dequeues in the file and needs testing on hardware.
Metadata realignment after an encoder drop: not implemented. It needs a correlation that survives the encoder; I did not find one without hardware.
Per-stream record: false: not added. It is a feature, and today an unrecordable stream blocks recording with a message naming it.
Name clash and rooms: a LiveKit name matching a camera, or more than one URL, room or publisher, is now rejected when the server config is built.
Backend and CaptureServer on one host: recording is refused unless CaptureServer's URL is a loopback address.
CUDA and the home-directory path:CUDA::cudart and CUDA::cuda_driver are linked, the raw flags are gone from the README, and the personal search path is removed.
Nits: the .gitignore entries are removed, the README wording is neutral, and the test uses an RFC 5737 address.
livekit as a hard dependency: now an optional extra (uv sync --extra livekit, included in dev). The backend starts without it, and a LiveKit stream is reported unrecordable with a message naming the extra.
Verified: the egocap backend, tools and CaptureServer suites pass with a livekit install and the new optional-package tests pass without one. The Jetson-only C++ and CMake could not be built here.
…out what it shows
Read the environment once, log through the repository logger, and say in
the comment and the runbook that the counter-to-host difference includes
sensor, ISP and dequeue delay, so it is not a mapping and must not be
subtracted as one. The runbook now lists the evidence real Orin recording
needs. Jetson source, not compiled here.

The Jetson V4L2 encoder does not return the timestamp it was given on the
output plane: its units are numbered from its own frame rate (stamp 0, then
33333 us, ...). The LiveKit output matched each returned unit to a capture by
timestamp, so the first unit already matched nothing and the publisher exited
with "the encoder returned a unit for a frame it was not given".
The encoder returns one unit per accepted frame in submission order, so pair
each unit with the oldest capture in flight. Bound the in-flight queue so a
frame dropped inside the encoder cannot leave later frames paired with the
wrong capture's metadata.
Run on an AGX Orin with two SHW5G cameras: both tracks publish to a LiveKit
room at 30 fps (about 2,100 frames each in 70 s). Not seen in a browser.

…estamp contract as observed
The probe no longer subtracts an unscaled counter from nanoseconds. The
encoder comments now match the Orin behaviour (returned stamp is not the
submitted one; pair by order), and the in-flight cap is described as
bounding staleness, not repairing a shifted pairing.

Size the recording ingress and the receiver queues from the recordable LiveKit
frame geometry, so a stalled writer no longer fails a take at full-size

stopping silently. Bound the room leave during teardown and the wait for the

…at was lost
The receiver connects without automatic subscription and subscribes to the
offered tracks of the offered publisher. A replaced publication drops the old
queued frames and counts as a discontinuity, a stale unsubscribe is ignored, a
stream that ends normally is lost, and frame-number strides are learned so
paced streams are not counted as loss. The recording feed ends a take on
dropped frames, a replaced publication or five seconds of silence, and reports
what was lost. Receiver queue storage is counted once in the memory budget.
