Part of #1232. This follows up on #1424 with the points both of its reviews raised.

Problem: #1424 limited the shared to default tenancy mapping to AWS EC2 when a suppression variant is built. PurchaseSuppression.AppliesTo, however, applied the mapping to every provider and service. An AWS RDS or Azure suppression stored with shared would therefore match a default variant, which contradicts #1424's own "non-EC2 untouched" test. No current producer writes a non-EC2 tenancy, so nothing is mismatched today.

Change:

  • AppliesTo maps tenancy only when the suppression row is AWS EC2. It uses the same new isAWSEC2 helper as SuppressionVariant.
  • detailsAvailabilityZone trims whitespace, as the scheduler and api readers of the Details AZ already do. A non-string zone returns "".
  • The doc comment on SuppressionVariant is corrected.
  • common.NormalizeTenancyName is not reused here. In the pinned version it case-folds and maps every unknown value to "", so two different unknown tenancies would match each other. A comment in the code records this.

Tests:

  • A table test for AppliesTo: a stored shared row on AWS ec2 or compute applies to a default variant, and a stored shared row on AWS rds or Azure compute does not.
  • A test for the Details AZ with a padded zone and with a non-string zone.
  • Mutation probes: changing the EC2 guard to if true fails the RDS and Azure rows, and removing the TrimSpace fails the padded-AZ case.

Local:

  • go build ./... passes, and go test -race passes on config, scheduler, purchase and api.
  • -tags integration passes on config and scheduler (testcontainers Postgres).
  • pre-commit passes.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved suppression matching for AWS EC2 recommendations by consistently handling shared and dedicated tenancy values. Other provider and service combinations retain their existing tenancy comparison behavior.
    • Availability zones provided in recommendation details now ignore surrounding whitespace. Missing or non-text zone values continue to be treated as unavailable.

AppliesTo canonicalised tenancy "shared" to "default" for every provider
and service, so a stored non-EC2 row (e.g. rds, azure compute) with
"shared" matched a "default" variant. Limit it to AWS EC2 through the same
isAWSEC2 predicate SuppressionVariant uses.

detailsAvailabilityZone now trims like the other Details-AZ readers, a
non-string zone yields "", and the stale SuppressionVariant doc comment is
corrected. common.NormalizeTenancyName is not adopted: it maps unknown
tenancies to "", which would make distinct unknown values match.

Part of #1232

Walkthrough

Tenancy canonicalization and Details-based availability-zone fallback now apply only to AWS EC2 suppression variants. Decoded availability-zone values are trimmed. Tests cover AWS EC2 and compute aliases, other provider/service combinations, and non-string zone values.

Independent review 2 (claude-fleet, cold): APPROVE at eecf9bd

This follows up my #1424 notes N1-N5, from the same reviewer.

Blocking: none.
Non-blocking:

  • internal/config/recommendation_identity.go:108-110. The parenthetical "(ComputeIdentity has already reported a decode error)" is still there, and it is still false for a non-string AZ. ComputeIdentity decodes only platform and tenancy, so {"availability_zone":5} gives no error, and the new test proves this. The added sentence "A non-string zone yields """ documents the result, so it is a documented "" rather than a hidden one. The behaviour is not fail-loud: a malformed legacy AZ silently becomes a regional variant, which under-suppresses (a possible double buy). No producer writes a non-string AZ, so the risk is low. Fix the parenthetical or return an error.
  • recommendation_identity.go:97-101. I verified the reason for not reusing NormalizeTenancyName: in the pinned pkg@ff6225d, common/engine.go:98-107 maps every unknown value to "" and case-folds and trims. The local normaliser still neither folds case nor trims, and the comment does not say that a legacy "Shared" or " shared" is out of scope. The probe shows case handling is still untested. The pinned CE parser emits lowercase "default", so I see no live title-case producer. Add one line to the comment saying title-case is out of scope, or add EqualFold and TrimSpace (folding only "shared" has none of the unknown-maps-to-"" risk).
  • types.go:801-803. The rec-side (b) normalisation is still redundant (N2, not addressed). It is harmless because both sides share the suppression's 6-tuple group.
    Items:
N1 | yes | types.go:801 is gated by isAWSEC2(s.Provider, s.Service). Q1 and Q2 now fail the rds and azure subtests.
N2 | no (harmless) | Q3 (normalise the stored side only) still passes every test. The two are equivalent because SuppressionVariant already canonicalises the rec for AWS EC2 (recommendation_identity.go:81).
N3 | partly | The unknown-maps-to-"" claim is true (engine.go:98-107). Case and trim are still not handled or scoped out.
N4 | yes | recommendation_identity.go:68-74 now says only platform and tenancy share the read, and it documents the EC2-only legacy steps.
N5 | partly | TrimSpace was added (Q8 caught), and the non-string case is pinned to "" (Q5 caught). The false parenthetical remains.
isAWSEC2 (recommendation_identity.go:93-95) uses CanonicalSuppressionService and accepts both "ec2" and "compute". Q6 (compute only) fails the ec2 cases, and Q7 (ec2 only) fails the compute cases, on both the config and scheduler tests. Legacy stored rows with Service "ec2" are covered by the "aws ec2 stored-side shared" test case.
Probes (in a separate probe copy of the fresh head export, each restored with cp and checked with cmp, plus a final diff -r against head that came back clean):
Q1 unscope AppliesTo: caught (rds and azure subtests).
Q2 / P10 drop the aws check in isAWSEC2: caught (azure compute subtest).
Q3 / P1 normalise the stored side only: passes (equivalent, see N2).
    Q4 / P11 case-fold "shared": passes (case untested).
    Q5 non-string AZ leaks as "5": caught.
Q6 compute only: caught. Q7 ec2 only: caught. Q8 drop TrimSpace: caught.
Q9 unscope SuppressionVariant: caught (non-EC2 untouched).
    Commands (no cloud creds, GOTOOLCHAIN=go1.26.10):
  • First-parent log: eecf9bd has parent 4370fef (fix(config): match legacy EC2 tenancy and AZ shapes in purchase suppressions #1424). There are no merges in 4370fef..eecf9bd, so remerge-diff does not apply.
  • Fresh export: I made fresh dirs r1426/head and r1426/base with git archive. The base-to-head git diff is byte-identical to pr1426.diff.
  • go build ./...: ok. go vet on config and scheduler, with and without -tags integration: ok. gofmt -l: clean.
  • go test -count=1 config scheduler: ok.
  • golangci-lint: only the prealloc hit at store_postgres_history_page_integration_test.go:134, which predates this PR.
  • Fail-before (head test file on a base copy): the rds untouched, azure compute untouched and padded AZ trimmed subtests fail. The non-string case already returned "" on base.
  • Integration, run under nice -n 10 lockf -k -t 3600 /tmp/claude/heavy.lock: config ok (47.2s), scheduler ok (8.4s).
  • git merge-tree --write-tree origin/main(4370fef) eecf9bd: clean, tree b3fed77.

Independent review 1 (cold, fresh context):

VERDICT: APPROVE eecf9bd
Findings (all non-blocking):

  • nit internal/config/suppressions_build.go:46 - the local isAWSEC2 := ... shadows the new package func isAWSEC2 (recommendation_identity.go:93) and repeats its predicate, so there are two spellings of one scope check. If the scope changes, one copy can drift. Fix: if isAWSEC2(rec.Provider, rec.Service) && ....
  • nit internal/config/types.go:801-803 - canonicalising the rec side (b) is still redundant: SuppressionVariant already canonicalises every rec (recommendation_identity.go:81). Probe P6 (stored side only) passes every test, so the "rec shared vs stored default" direction fix(config): match legacy EC2 tenancy and AZ shapes in purchase suppressions #1424 asked to test is still untested. The new test covers only stored "shared" vs rec "default".
  • nit internal/config/suppressions_build_test.go:315-327 - TestRecommendationRecord_SuppressionVariant_DetailsAZ calls detailsAvailabilityZone directly, not SuppressionVariant, so the padded-AZ trim is not shown through the fallback. fix(config): match legacy EC2 tenancy and AZ shapes in purchase suppressions #1424's tests cover the fallback wiring, so this gap is small.
    Attacked:
  1. Guard scope (types.go:801). BuildSuppressions writes Service canonicalised (suppressions_build.go:35). Legacy stored "ec2" rows still hit isAWSEC2 through CanonicalSuppressionService (types.go:781), and the test covers both "ec2" and "compute". The guard reads only s, but s and the rec always share a group: aggregateSuppressions (scheduler.go:1414-1422) and applySuppressionIndex (scheduler.go:1462-1468) key both by the raw provider plus the canonical service. So s.Provider == rec.Provider and the canonical services are equal, and checking s is equivalent to checking the rec. Provider case is not folded on either side, which matches SuppressionVariant's r.Provider == "aws". AppliesTo has one caller (scheduler.go:1440), so the rec-swap probe is moot: it would need a signature change and is equivalent by construction.
  2. NormalizeTenancyName (pkg@ff6225d5ff04 common/engine.go:98-107; the PR's go.mod pins ff6225d, not the ad67030 in the shared checkout's go.mod): ToLower+TrimSpace, default|shared->default, dedicated|host kept, anything else -> "". The author's reason holds: two distinct unknown values, or an unknown value and "", would compare equal. On the write side that would also turn an unknown-tenancy rec into {platform,""}, near the EC2 wildcard at suppressions_build.go:47. Rejecting it is right, and the reason is documented at recommendation_identity.go:99-100.
  3. detailsAvailabilityZone (recommendation_identity.go:111-119): TrimSpace now matches scheduler/zonal_recs.go:14 and api handler_purchases.go:3515. A non-string zone makes Unmarshal fail and gives "" (documented). The trim could only break an existing match if a row stored by fix(config): match legacy EC2 tenancy and AZ shapes in purchase suppressions #1424 carried a padded Details AZ. The AWS parser emits CE zones verbatim and unpadded, and the field-AZ path is untouched, so the risk is negligible.
Probes (scratch export, each restored with cp, then both files cmp-identical to git show SHA:):
P1 guard -> true: config AppliesTo test fails. P5 guard -> false: config test and scheduler TestApplySuppressions_LegacyEC2Shapes fail.
P7 drop "aws" in isAWSEC2: config test fails (azure case). P3 remove TrimSpace: DetailsAZ test fails.
    P4 non-string -> fmt.Sprint (yields "5"): DetailsAZ test fails. P6 stored-side-only canon: all pass (nit 2).
Commands: go test -race -count=1 config+scheduler: ok. lockf heavy.lock go test -tags integration config+scheduler: ok (37.1s, 9.2s).
    merge-tree origin/main(b3fed77-based) x SHA: clean. merge-tree pull/1425 head(0bdd100) x SHA: clean, tree 9600441; go vet + go test config+scheduler on that merged tree: ok.
Six dimensions: complete against fix(config): match legacy EC2 tenancy and AZ shapes in purchase suppressions #1424's follow-up list except the rec-direction test (nit 2); correct; no security surface; no bugs found; duplication nit 1; not over-engineered.

Both reviews approve eecf9bd. Since this PR is itself the #1424 cleanup, the nits from both go into one more commit here rather than a further PR: reuse isAWSEC2 in suppressions_build.go, drop the redundant rec-side canonicalisation in AppliesTo, fix the decode-error comment for a non-string AZ, and accept legacy Shared regardless of case and surrounding spaces. Each reviewer then checks just that commit.

Reuse the package isAWSEC2 in suppressions_build.go instead of a shadowing
local copy. AppliesTo canonicalises only the stored side, since
SuppressionVariant already canonicalises every rec variant. Tenancy
"shared" now matches case-insensitively after trimming. Correct the
detailsAvailabilityZone comment (a non-string zone is treated as absent)
and test the padded zone through SuppressionVariant.

Independent review 1, delta (same cold reviewer):

VERDICT: APPROVE f1eb544
Delta eecf9bd..f1eb544 is one commit. The suppressions_build.go:45 reuse of isAWSEC2 is equivalent to the old check: b.service is already canonical, and CanonicalSuppressionService is idempotent ("compute" stays "compute"). The unused common import was dropped.

  • nit internal/config/recommendation_identity.go:99-100 - the comment still says NormalizeTenancyName "also case-folds". The local helper now case-folds and trims too, so the only reason left is that unknown values map to "". Reword it.
    Attacked:
  • Rec-side canon removal: AppliesTo has one production caller, scheduler.go:1440, and it passes rec.SuppressionVariant() (scheduler.go:1434), which canonicalises tenancy for AWS EC2 (recommendation_identity.go:81). The other AppliesTo calls are tests in suppressions_build_test.go (146-153, 169, 188, 308, 312), and every one passes "default" or "dedicated", never a raw "shared". No caller relied on the rec-side canon.
  • go vet + go test -race -count=1 ./internal/config/ ./internal/scheduler/ on an archive of f1eb544: ok.
  • P6' (remove the stored-side canon in AppliesTo): config TestPurchaseSuppression_AppliesTo_LegacySharedTenancy and scheduler TestApplySuppressions_LegacyEC2Shapes FAIL.
  • Case-fold probe (EqualFold -> ==): TestCanonicalSuppressionTenancy FAILS. Extra probe (drop TrimSpace inside the canon): the same test FAILS.
  • After each probe I restored the file with cp and confirmed it is cmp-identical to git show f1eb5441:<file>. gofmt -l is clean.
  • merge-tree origin/main x f1eb544: clean (tree d88f70b). merge-tree pull/1425 head x f1eb544: clean (tree fe4d841).
  • The DetailsAZ test now goes through SuppressionVariant with require.NoError. The non-string case shows that ComputeIdentity tolerates a bad AZ type and yields "", which matches the new comment.
I removed the scratch dirs I created. Nothing was posted.

This PR leaves the comment nit at recommendation_identity.go:99-100 as is. It's comment-only, so it will be fixed the next time this code is touched rather than restarting both gates.

Independent review 2 (claude-fleet, cold): APPROVE at f1eb544

Delta re-review after my APPROVE at eecf9bd, same reviewer.

Blocking: none.
Non-blocking:

  • No scheduler test covers the rec-side direction now that AppliesTo canonicalises only the stored row. If I drop the rec canonicalisation in SuppressionVariant (recommendation_identity.go:82), only a config variant-value test fails. Nothing tests a legacy "shared" rec against a stored "default" row end to end. The code is still correct today (see the caller recheck).
  • recommendation_identity.go:108-110: a non-string AZ is now an honestly documented "" ("treated as absent (regional), which can under-suppress; no producer writes one"). It does not fail loud. The false ComputeIdentity parenthetical is gone.
  • Only "shared" is case-folded. "Dedicated" stays case-sensitive (pinned by TestCanonicalSuppressionTenancy). That is acceptable, since no producer emits title-case.
Delta (eecf9bd..f1eb544, one commit, first parent eecf9bd, no merges):
  • canonicalSuppressionTenancy uses EqualFold(TrimSpace(t), "shared") (recommendation_identity.go:102).
  • AppliesTo canonicalises only the stored side, with a why-comment (types.go:801-805).
  • suppressionBucketOf reuses isAWSEC2 (suppressions_build.go:45), and the common import is dropped. This is equivalent: b.service was already canonicalised at :35.
  • The DetailsAZ test now goes through SuppressionVariant.
  • New test: TestCanonicalSuppressionTenancy.
    All five claims are verified.
AppliesTo caller recheck: the only production caller is scheduler.go:1440 (matchingSuppressions). Its argument is either rec.SuppressionVariant() (:1435), which canonicalises AWS EC2 at :81-82, or nil, which is a wildcard. Every other call is in suppressions_build_test.go. No caller skips SuppressionVariant.
Group membership ties the rec to the row: the rec and the row share provider and canonical service (aggregateSuppressions :1414, CanonicalSuppressionService), so isAWSEC2 gives the same answer on both sides. No direction is lost.
Probes (on a copy of the fresh export; each restored with cp and checked with cmp; a final diff -r against head was clean):
  • D1 drop EqualFold: caught. D2 drop the tenancy TrimSpace: caught. Both fail TestCanonicalSuppressionTenancy.
  • D3 drop the stored-side step: caught in config (ec2 and compute) and in the scheduler (stored shared row vs default rec). It is now the only thing making this match work.
  • D4 drop the AZ TrimSpace: caught (padded AZ, via SuppressionVariant).
  • D5 ec2-only isAWSEC2: caught in config and scheduler. D6 compute-only: caught in config and scheduler.
  • D7 non-string AZ leaking as "5": caught.
  • D8 unscope AppliesTo: caught (rds and azure).
  • D9 drop the rec-side variant step: config fails, scheduler passes (the test gap above).
    Commands (no cloud creds, GOTOOLCHAIN=go1.26.10):
  • Fetched pr/1426 and confirmed it resolves to the full f1eb544 SHA. Origin/main is 4370fef.
  • Fresh git archive exports of head and base.
  • go build ./...: ok. go vet on config and scheduler, with and without -tags integration: ok. gofmt -l: clean.
  • go test -count=1 on config and scheduler: ok.
  • golangci-lint: only the prealloc hit in store_postgres_history_page_integration_test.go:134, which predates this PR.
  • Fail-before: the head tests on base fail the rds and azure untouched, padded AZ and TestCanonicalSuppressionTenancy cases.
  • Integration under the heavy lock: config ok (36.5s), scheduler ok (9.2s).
  • git merge-tree --write-tree origin/main f1eb544: clean, tree d88f70b.
