fix(testnet): isolate read-only ENSv2 adapter manifest mount - #274
Correct the Testnet ENSv2 adapter manifest mount: /deployment.json is outside the read-only /app code bind. Select it through DOS_NAMES_DEPLOYMENT; preserve all existing non-root/read-only/capability/network restrictions.
Add red-to-green layout/mode guards and update the Testnet validator. Explicitly set only the public adapter directory to 0755 and its entrypoint/manifest to 0644; staging umask must not make these artifacts unreadable to UID 1000. Secret permissions remain unchanged.
CI now starts the production entrypoint in the pinned Docker image with the same two read-only bind mounts, memory/CPU limits and no network. This covers the OCI mount/manifest/startup failure that module tests and compose config did not catch.
Its rollback stopped at the existing database-writer container-state gate before database drop/restore. Recovered prior public configuration and restarted Testnet services on the existing persistent volumes. Backend became healthy, BENS is SERVING and the public API reads block 300. No database restore was performed.
The separate container-removal diagnostic remains a follow-up. This patch does not weaken or change rollback gates, modify contracts/BENS/Blockscout core, or touch Mainnet.
Verification
New layout regression failed before the fix; full Linux workflow suite now passes 103/103 in 48.042s on the runtime source, plus 2/2 affected layout/mode regressions on final head bd9f5f8.
Real Docker production-entrypoint startup with the fixed mounts and public file modes passed both locally and on the actual Testnet VM, using the pinned Node digest, non-root/read-only, cap-drop, no-new-privileges, resource limits and network none.
Compose configuration and git diff --check pass.
Independent final-head delta review pending; required CI and fresh Testnet deployment/browser acceptance must pass before completion.
📌 TL;DR
This PR fixes a runtime failure in the DOS Names testnet adapter by moving the deployment manifest mount from the read-only /app code directory to a separate /deployment.json path, and adds a CI smoke test to verify the production entrypoint starts correctly under these constraints.
Adds a regression test to ensure the Docker Compose configuration mounts the deployment manifest at /deployment.json (outside the read-only /app directory) and sets the DOS_NAMES_DEPLOYMENT environment variable.
.github/workflows/dependency-build.yml
Adds a CI step that runs the adapter in a hardened Docker container (read-only, no-new-privileges, non-root) with actual bind mounts to verify the production entrypoint starts successfully and logs the expected "listening" message.
docker-compose/docker-compose-testnet.yml
Updates the bens-ensv2-adapter service to mount deployment.json at /deployment.json instead of /app/deployment.json and adds the DOS_NAMES_DEPLOYMENT environment variable pointing to the new path.
Documents the incident where the previous mount path caused a Docker failure, the rollback procedure, and the architectural decision to separate the manifest mount from the code directory.
scripts/validate-testnet-bens.py
Updates the validation logic to check for the new mount path (/deployment.json) and the DOS_NAMES_DEPLOYMENT environment variable, ensuring the configuration matches the fixed layout.

The Testnet BENS adapter now mounts deployment.json outside its read-only code directory and selects it through DOS_NAMES_DEPLOYMENT. The validator and regression test enforce this layout. CI adds a restricted-container startup check, and the plan records the deployment failure and recovery.

Compose mounts the deployment manifest at /deployment.json and sets DOS_NAMES_DEPLOYMENT to that path. The validator and regression test enforce the layout. The plan records the deployment failure, rollback gate, and recovery.
The workflow runs the DOS Names server in a restricted container. It fails if the process cannot start or does not emit its listening message within five seconds.

Code Review
This pull request addresses a runtime failure where mounting the deployment manifest inside the read-only /app directory failed. The fix mounts the manifest separately at /deployment.json and configures it via the DOS_NAMES_DEPLOYMENT environment variable, with corresponding updates to validation scripts, tests, and documentation. Feedback was provided on a test that parses the docker-compose file using hardcoded service names, which is fragile and should be replaced with a regular expression.

Final runtime preflight found staged public files inheriting 0700/0600 umask modes. The follow-up commit explicitly makes only the public adapter directory 0755 and its entrypoint/manifest 0644, both during Testnet apply and CI startup. No secret modes or runtime security restrictions change. The production entrypoint then started successfully on the actual Testnet VM with UID 1000, read-only rootfs/binds, dropped capabilities, resource limits and network none. Full Linux regression suite: 103/103 passed in 48.042s. Independent review and required CI must cover this updated head before merge.
Independent final-head review completed for bd9f5f8 over the full b168649 integration delta: CLEAN_PASS, no P0-P3 findings. Verified root-level manifest mount/env binding, public-only chmod targets, unchanged secret/container restrictions, and the final service-boundary/doc clarifications. Runtime evidence reused: 103 Linux tests, affected final-head layout/mode guards, and actual VM Docker entrypoint startup. All native actionable threads have been fixed, replied to and resolved. Required final-head CI remains a merge gate; fresh Testnet rollout and browser NFT acceptance remain pending.
Deploy Config run https://github.com/DOS/DOScan/actions/runs/40200373407 succeeded for DOScan revision f537c035ecca6d8b0a1fb80238cb9db4e48e6c84. Beta and Mainnet jobs were skipped. DOS Names source is pinned to merged 2d47fb77bb09dcbdc9d7bfeee77d12ddbebc2e4d. VM adapter code SHA256 0884697a7e877204bf7805c0dea6d5830b02690498c48af76fac5fa0d3e151ec matches reviewed source. Node uses the pinned digest, UID 1000, read-only rootfs, ALL capabilities dropped, no published ports, healthy state. Backend reads MICROSERVICE_BENS_URL=http://bens-ensv2-adapter:8050/.
Public domain metadata preserves namehash and now exposes HTTPS Testnet origin and actual ERC-1155 ID 109853185306708996857436761598381125367517663046059027338278467513256125661184, not the namehash-derived ID. NFT page opens, shows the full ID, ERC-1155 and owner 0x310Bc061214ee89aF5CfB28a6ebF96c5436fa3CD, without Page not found/Oops.
Actual browser acceptance completed using the equivalent browser controller after Playwright actionability stalled: type bens-smoke.dos, activate the result with Enter, verify the canonical address page and name badge; from domain details activate its NFT anchor with native keyboard and verify the same-tab NFT destination. Full-page screenshot was visually inspected. The anchor target is null, so follow-up test-only PR test(testnet): follow same-origin NFT links in the current tab #275 corrects the prior popup-only assumption.
Hosted Playwright CI reported 1 skipped due Cloudflare. This is not counted as passing UI coverage; the actual browser flow above is separate evidence.
Policy claim receipts for policy-smoke and smart-wallet fixture e2epolicy01 were verified. Paid renewal transaction 0xce800d5b23a7eb1a0cf7318585af76b02e0e93e0b7ce468038ff941732c1094c succeeded at block 299, retained the token and owner, extended expiry exactly 365 days to Unix 1855667273, and paid WDOS. Public metadata expiry is the same instant as 2028-10-20T15:07:53Z; history contains both claim and renewal receipts. Live local-Caddy search/history and public metadata were read back after deployment.
Wrong wallet, invalid/expired voucher, quote bound, consumed nonce and direct registrar bypass returned the expected contract errors. DOS.Me service unit tests passed 11/11, but no authenticated real DOS.Me user E2E was performed and no admission/score/auth binding was bypassed. No DOS.Me writes or Mainnet actions.
Incident record retained: the first rollout failed, and automatic rollback stopped at the container-state safety gate before DB restore. Services were recovered on existing volumes, without database drop/restore. Full automatic rollback remains an unverified follow-up; the safety gate was not weakened.
Final checkpoint: test-only PR275 is merged as 33f1e90 after final-head independent review and required CI (104/104 tests). It corrects same-tab versus popup browser assertions only; no runtime redeploy was required or triggered. The completed runtime/browser/fixture policy acceptance in the preceding comment remains the delivery evidence, with real DOS.Me user E2E and full automatic rollback explicitly not claimed.
