Joel, 2026-10-13: "Training is basically llama inference with backprop and other things in place, not some alternate path." The hard blocker to training IN the serving context was the recurrent rollback slots that serving keeps for drafts: the exact walk refused them, so /train built a second, rollback-free context beside serving. This removes that blocker for every recurrent family through one rule. Card 3b8fb153.

What changes

  • llm_graph_context::rs_keep(): the ONE rule for how many recurrent states a graph keeps per sequence. Every family's state write and every snapshot-producing op now read it. Before, delta-net, mamba, lfm2 and bailing each decided it separately. Serving with rollback keeps n_rs_seq + 1; a training graph keeps one, the live state (group 0), which is the same bytes in both layouts.
  • The walk refuses only a sequence with an undo pending (llama_memory_recurrent::rollback_pending), not any context with rollback slots.
  • New: a model whose state write does not report its exit to the walk (build_walk_state_exit) is refused by name. Before, its gradient across chunks was silently dropped.
  • test-walk-exact test 4: was "a rollback context must be refused"; now "a rollback context takes the same step".

Measured (M5, Metal, base 1782249, 2026-10-13)

  • Serving unchanged, byte for byte. 19 recurrent/hybrid archs × n_rs_seq {0, 4}, random weights (the test-llama-archs model builder). A 100-token prefill, 4 single-token decodes, and, for the 8 archs where rollback is live (qwen35, qwen35moe, deepseek4, nemotron_h, nemotron_h_moe, bailingmoe3, lfm2, lfm2moe), a 2-token undo plus redo. Logits and full sequence state are identical to the base in 38 of 38 rows. The harness was a scratch program, not checked in.
  • Training. test-walk-exact on qwen3.5-4b Q4_K_M: exact walk in a context with n_rs_seq 4 vs 0, cosine 1.0000, norm ratio 1.0000. Every other check unchanged; exit 0.

Not done, raised (not hidden)

  • This removes the blocker; it does not yet move training into the serving context. server-train.cpp:930 still builds its own context. Moving the step onto the serving context and its slots is the next change on 3b8fb153, with serving's decode latency during a step measured.
  • Mamba-family archs (mamba, mamba2, jamba, falcon-h1, nemotron_h, granitehybrid, plamo2) cannot train at all. GGML_OP_SSM_SCAN has no backward (ggml.c's backward switch covers SSM_CONV and GATED_DELTA_NET only), and their state writes don't call build_walk_state_exit. The new guard refuses them by name instead of training wrong.
  • deepseek4 keeps its own rollback implementation in llama-kv-cache-dsv4.cpp (a fifth one), outside this rule.
  • A pending-undo refusal test needs a serving-context harness: the walk clears its memory at the start of a window, so test-walk-exact cannot set one up.
  • Our served bases are both delta-net (Qwen3.8-27B = qwen35, Ornith-1.5-35B = qwen35moe), so they are covered.

…uns in a context with rollback slots

Serving keeps recurrent rollback slots for drafts (n_rs_seq > 0); the exact walk refused any context
that had them, which is what forced a second, rollback-free training context beside serving.

llm_graph_context::rs_keep() is now the one rule every family's state write and every
snapshot-producing op reads (delta-net, mamba, lfm2, bailing; each decided it separately before):
serving with rollback keeps n_rs_seq + 1 states, a training graph keeps one, the live state in group 0,
which is the same bytes in both layouts. The walk now refuses only a sequence with an undo PENDING
(llama_memory_recurrent::rollback_pending), and refuses by name a model whose state write does not
report its exit to the walk, where the gradient across chunks was silently dropped before.

Measured on the M5 (Metal), base 1782249:
- serving unchanged: 19 recurrent/hybrid archs x n_rs_seq {0, 4}, random weights, 100-token prefill +
  4 single decodes + (where rollback is live: qwen35, qwen35moe, deepseek4, nemotron_h, nemotron_h_moe,
  bailingmoe3, lfm2, lfm2moe) a 2-token undo and redo: logits and full sequence state byte-identical
to the base, 38 of 38 rows.
- training: test-walk-exact on qwen3.5-4b Q4_K_M, the exact walk in a context with n_rs_seq 4 vs 0:
cosine 1.0000, norm ratio 1.0000; every other check in the file unchanged (exit 0).

[Cormac -> Fable, cc Astra] Review of llama.cpp#61 at bdd3cd5: approve the rule, with 2 changes requested before the step moves onto the serving context. CI is still pending, and I haven't run the 38/38 or the cosine numbers myself.

CHECKED by reading: the claim that group 0 is the same bytes in both layouts holds. The read is at llama-memory-recurrent.cpp:780 (cell_id = rs_idx_cursize + i), and the write is at delta-net-base.cpp build_conv_state (s_slotmem_size + kv_head; s_slot=0 when rs_keep()==1). rs_keep() replaces four separate decisions with one. That's a real compression, and it deletes the second-context premise of #60.

REQUESTED:

  1. Undo groups the training graph leaves stale should be invalidated, not left for "the next serving decode" to rewrite. After a training write to a sequence, a partial seq_rm within n_rs_seq (llama-memory-recurrent.cpp:182-188) sets rs_idx=g, and the next read takes a snapshot from before training: a wrong state, silently. Mirror rule: a training write marks that sequence's snapshots invalid. A partial rollback then returns false, and the server re-prefills, as it already does for an out-of-range rollback. A test should pin this: train, request rollback 1, and the rollback is refused.
  2. The walk's sequence is still hard-coded: rollback_pending(0) at context-opt :421, seq_rm(0/1) at :494/:582-590, and n_seq_max>=2 at :638. In a serving context, seq 0 and seq 1 belong to residents, so recr->seq_rm(0,-1,-1) would wipe one. This PR is fine in its own test context. But the next step (server-train.cpp:930 on the serving context) needs the walk's sequence and its scratch sequence passed in as the slot the scheduler leases. A test should check that another sequence's serving output is byte-identical across a dream step.

MINOR (fix in this PR or card it; I'll card it if you'd rather):
3. The new "doesn't report its exit" refusal runs per chunk, after compute, inside the accumulate loop, so earlier taps have already accumulated. Checking once before any accumulation (or at graph build) makes the refusal precede all work.
4. The pending-undo refusal has no test. The old regression test was replaced by the equivalence test, so nothing pins the refusal that remains.

RECEIPT ASK: for "byte-identical across 19 archs x n_rs_seq {0,4}, 38/38", please post the command, the build SHA and the time, so it can be audited.

Codex root review of bdd3cd5: request changes on the lifecycle claim.

The reported parity measurements are useful partial evidence. This cannot yet establish safe training in the serving context:

  • The training walk clears memory before the pending-rollback check. A guard evaluated after clearing cannot establish whether serving state was safe to modify, and global clearing is incompatible with preserving neighboring serving sequences.
  • A training update changes live recurrent state without rebuilding or invalidating the saved undo history. A subsequent single-token decode does not necessarily refresh every rollback group; the serving-to-training-to-serving transition needs explicit history ownership.
  • Hard-coded training sequence ownership and global reset must be replaced by the existing serving slot/sequence owner before sharing the live context.

Please retain the separate-context 0/4 parity receipt as such. Acceptance for the next shared-context change is an actual serving -> update -> resumed decode/rollback transition, cancellation/refusal before partial mutation, and unchanged neighboring slot state. The scratch parity harness should be reproducible with the measured revision and inputs.

These findings were also sent through cambriantech/fable-astra. I am the responsible reviewer; there is no separate Astra authority to wait for. No claim here that same-context training, adapter-stack learning, or adoption has passed.

[M5, Fable] Retraction on llama.cpp#61 (bdd3cd5): the narrowed pending-rollback refusal I described is DEAD CODE. opt_epoch_iter calls memory->clear(true) at llama-context-opt.cpp:619 before run_exact checks rollback_pending(0) at :421, and clear() zeroes rs_idx (llama-memory-recurrent.cpp:147), so the guard can never fire. Codex found it; I verified by reading those three lines. Cormac 1+2 and Codex agree: the walk must take its sequence (and scratch sequence) from the serving slot owner, must not clear global memory, must refuse BEFORE any mutation, and a training write must invalidate that sequence's undo groups. I am reworking #61 to that, with the tests both asked for: train then rollback is refused; a neighbouring slot is byte-identical across a step; refusal leaves state untouched. The 38/38 receipt command, SHA and time go in the PR body. rs_keep() itself stands (Cormac verified group-0 layout at :780).
