Can't install to usb stick

The laptop's SSD is fried, so I'm trying to install from a usb stick, to another usb stick (good quality sticks). However, both cfdisk and the filesystems menu item fail to work with the target usb stick, and they just unmount it completely. I never had trouble installing to a usb stick before with either arch, or debian-based.

What exactly do you mean by 'they just unmount it completely'?

For example, I click to do something on cfdisk, then I say "write", it says "can't read (or was it write?) disk label", and from then on, the usb stick is unmounted. Same if I go to set filesystems, e.g. I'd go to set mount points, and then come back one screen back, and /dev/sdb wouldn't be there anymore, it'd be unmounted. If remove it and re-insert it, it gets mounted again, then I hit "install" and it says that it can't write to it (it's been unmounted again). Basically, any operation of writing on it, it unmounts the drive. Same happens from the command line too, not just inside void-installer.

is this the usb stick the live environment is booted from?

No, it's a separate usb stick, on another port. They're both the same brand and model, but other than that, separate. The system correctly assigns them as sda and sdb.

it sounds like a file manager does some automagic, or otherwise udev and the similar tools could play with these, but thats probably innocent here... can u format the drive with any partitioning tool? (correction: ok, not, sorry, but after killing any automount settings or even ur graphical session while playing on a tty, i guess i should let u move forward...) i think it should trigger the same while it provides u a way forward... do u need to mount it manually on the 1st place?
