VScode extension: linting is not working

Linting is not working.
For example, Jupyter notebooks detect and point the errors below:

while Quarto does not:

Also, Quarto HELP Pane does not provide any content in some cases like this one for glimpse:

Hi there, linting is known not to work in .qmd files (we have issues w/ mapping the Quick Fix positions correctly back into the .qmd file). Note that none of the diagnostic engines know how to analyze a .qmd so we need to present them with a "fake" e.g. Python script for code intelligence features. In the case of diagnostics the quick fix suggestions don't get mapped correctly back into the .qmd.

In terms of Quarto Help, we are there just calling the VS Code "hover" API for the target language --- if you hover over something and see content and then observe that placing the cursor within the same content doesn't drive help then yes file an issue (however if there is no hover, we definitely won't be able to provide help).

It's a pity, I would love when Quarto allows us to completely replace Jupyter notebooks (which I'm really not a fan).

Yes, when I hover on glimpse in a .ipynb file, I get this:

But when I hover in a .qmd file, I get nothing on the Quarto Help pane. I will open a separate issue then.

Bear in mind that I needed to install Jupyter Powertoys due to this issue microsoft/vscode-jupyter#1307 (comment) .

I would like to +1 the interest in linting support in quarto. In VS Code, this works fine in RMarkdown. Thus for pure R, quarto is a downgrade in a key sense, and seemingly also likewise WRT to pure python projects.

If at all possible, I would also like to see linting for Python, R, ... in qmd files.
Maybe the developers of the respective linting packages could be nudged to support qmd files directly?

I checked with lintr, and it seems they have been supporting qmd files at least since version 3.0.1. I just tried lint_dir() from R Interactive, and it works, so it only needs to be activated.

But I'm not sure whether that's a matter for the Quarto extension or for the R language server?

Linting / suggestions for markdown as well as the quarto specific syntax such as

::: {.notes}
abc
:::

would be nice as well.

You can use air for formatting in either Positron or VS Code with Quarto files:
https://posit-dev.github.io/air/editor-vscode.html#quarto

Be aware that:

• the scope of a formatter like air or ruff is a bit different than lintr; I imagine it will get you a lot of what you want but may not be exactly what you are used to
• there are a few rough edges around formatting code cells in Quarto that we intend to address in the not-distant future; see Reformating R cell in VSCODE with air does not correctly close chunk #745 (and proposed solution in Fix cell formatting issues #754) as well as Formatting doesn't work for indented blocks #811 and related issues

There are also plans to provide a parser for Quarto markdown itself, which could provide diagnostics and linting (but not for the code cells; you'll still need something that does static code analysis for the code cells).
