From fff65501d775ba95ad0b5049aab64ae7488b7a69 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Caglar Pir Date: Tue, 22 Sep 2026 16:27:02 +0200 Subject: [PATCH 1/9] Honour --geotag_source in distance-based sampling Distance sampling called GeotagVideosFromVideo() directly, bypassing the geotag factory, so --geotag_source never reached it. Attaching a GPX is the documented answer for a camera whose embedded GPS is unusable, but the sampler needs positions just as much as geotagging does, and it only ever looked at the video's own telemetry. The GPX was read, reported in the log, and then ignored: video_process V.mp4 OUT --video_sample_distance 3 \ --geotag_source gpx --geotag_source_path V.gpx -> 0 frames Go through factory.process() instead. The consumer was already generic: _sample_video_stream_by_distance() takes a plain Sequence[geo.Point] and does not care where they came from, and GPXVideoExtractor already returns points rebased onto the video timeline. Only the producer was hardcoded. Routing rather than adding a fallback here keeps the source-selection policy in one place. sample_video.py has no business re-deciding which source may rescue a file; _build_video_geotag() stays the only map from a source to an extractor, and chaining (native, gpx) comes for free. Sampling defaults to NATIVE alone rather than to DEFAULT_GEOTAG_SOURCE_OPTIONS, which continues on to exiftool_runtime. That reader cannot see every field the noise filter rejects on, so defaulting to the full chain would make sampling accept tracks the native parser refuses. NATIVE-only is also exactly today's behaviour. _parse_source_options() moves from process_geotag_properties to geotag.factory, next to parse_source_option(), so both callers share one implementation instead of the sampler reaching for a private helper. commands/sample_video.py needs no change: it splats vars_args filtered by the signature of sample_video(), so the new parameters flow through from video_process, which registers the process command's arguments into the same parser. The standalone sample_video command does not register them, so they stay absent and the defaults apply. Verified end to end: no-GPS video + overlapping GPX 0 frames -> 86 frames noisy GoPro + overlapping GPX 0 frames -> 299 frames (with #831) noisy GoPro, no GPX still rejected --- mapillary_tools/geotag/factory.py | 53 +++++++- mapillary_tools/process_geotag_properties.py | 47 +------ mapillary_tools/sample_video.py | 60 ++++++++- tests/unit/test_sample_video.py | 124 ++++++++++++++++--- 4 files changed, 220 insertions(+), 64 deletions(-) diff --git a/mapillary_tools/geotag/factory.py b/mapillary_tools/geotag/factory.py index 4d1eeea0..522a25fb 100644 --- a/mapillary_tools/geotag/factory.py +++ b/mapillary_tools/geotag/factory.py @@ -22,7 +22,13 @@ geotag_videos_from_gpx, geotag_videos_from_video, ) -from .options import InterpolationOption, SOURCE_TYPE_ALIAS, SourceOption, SourceType +from .options import ( + InterpolationOption, + SOURCE_TYPE_ALIAS, + SourceOption, + SourcePathOption, + SourceType, +) LOG = logging.getLogger(__name__) @@ -58,6 +64,51 @@ def parse_source_option(source: str) -> list[SourceOption]: return [SourceOption(SourceType(SOURCE_TYPE_ALIAS.get(s, s))) for s in sources] +def parse_source_options( + geotag_source: T.Sequence[str], + video_geotag_source: T.Sequence[str], + geotag_source_path: Path | None, +) -> list[SourceOption]: + """ + Turn the raw --geotag_source / --video_geotag_source / --geotag_source_path + arguments into the option list that process() consumes. + """ + parsed_options: list[SourceOption] = [] + + if video_geotag_source and geotag_source: + LOG.warning( + "Video source options will be processed BEFORE the generic source options" + ) + + for s in video_geotag_source: + for video_option in parse_source_option(s): + video_option.filetypes = types.combine_filetype_filters( + video_option.filetypes, {types.FileType.VIDEO} + ) + parsed_options.append(video_option) + + for s in geotag_source: + parsed_options.extend(parse_source_option(s)) + + if geotag_source_path is not None: + for parsed_option in parsed_options: + if parsed_option.source_path is None: + parsed_option.source_path = SourcePathOption( + source_path=Path(geotag_source_path) + ) + else: + source_path_option = parsed_option.source_path + if source_path_option.source_path is None: + source_path_option.source_path = Path(geotag_source_path) + else: + LOG.warning( + "The option --geotag_source_path is ignored for source %s", + parsed_option, + ) + + return parsed_options + + def process( # Collection: ABC for sized iterable container classes paths: T.Iterable[Path], diff --git a/mapillary_tools/process_geotag_properties.py b/mapillary_tools/process_geotag_properties.py index 41d8e8a2..73ee9d45 100644 --- a/mapillary_tools/process_geotag_properties.py +++ b/mapillary_tools/process_geotag_properties.py @@ -14,11 +14,9 @@ from tqdm import tqdm from . import constants, exceptions, exif_write, types, utils -from .geotag.factory import parse_source_option, process +from .geotag.factory import parse_source_options, process from .geotag.options import ( InterpolationOption, - Now that distance sampling goes through the factory, that trips the sampler's assert, with a traceback, for a video with good GPS that used to sample fine: video_process max-360mode.mp4 --geotag_source exif AssertionError: expect 1 video metadata In video_process these sources are there to geotag the frames, as the legacy gopro source pointed at the video itself is. A GPX is then read from the video file, or not found in the directory. The default is still right, for exiftool_xml, which finds the XML files in the video directory through it. A GPX beside the video would not help anyway: the geotagging stage reads its GPX from the same default path, so a GPX needs --geotag_source_path either way. --- mapillary_tools/sample_video.py | 7 +++++-- tests/unit/test_sample_video.py | 12 ++++++++---- 2 files changed, 13 insertions(+), 6 deletions(-) diff --git a/mapillary_tools/sample_video.py b/mapillary_tools/sample_video.py index f99d748a..54103bd7 100644 --- a/mapillary_tools/sample_video.py +++ b/mapillary_tools/sample_video.py @@ -85,8 +85,11 @@ def _parse_geotag_options( if not geotag_source and not video_geotag_source: return [SourceOption(SourceType.NATIVE)] - # Mirrors process_geotag_properties(): a sidecar is looked for next to the - # video when no explicit path is given + # Without an explicit path, every source gets the video import path, as + # process_geotag_properties() gives it when geotagging the frames: that is + # how exiftool_xml finds the XML files in the video directory. The points keep their absolute times, so the sampler stamped each frame with the GPX start plus the frame's time, and the geotagging stage, which places the frames by those stamps, agreed. The result exited 0, looked consistent, and was wrong whenever the track did not start with the video: two clips of one drive, recorded hours apart and each given its own --video_start_time, came out as the same frames, stamped with the first minutes of the drive's GPX. Distance sampling now hands the extractor a VideoSyncOption carrying the start time the user gave, and the GPX on a video without GPS is placed by it. Only a given start time: the one probed from the container is creation_time - duration, a whole video length early on cameras whose creation_time marks the start, which would move their videos off their GPX. A video with GPS is still synced by its own GPS clock. process passes no VideoSyncOption and places a GPX exactly as before. Without a start time the track is still assumed to start with the video, but that is now checked. A track lasting more than twice as long as the video was not recorded for it alone, and the video could start anywhere along it, so the sample fails and asks for --video_start_time. A track a little longer than the video warns, since every frame is then up to that much too early along it. MapillaryGPXVideoStartUnknownError is not reprocessable: a source after the GPX in the chain could only report that the video has no GPS, hiding why the GPX was refused. A track that misses the video, such as one placed by a wrong --video_start_time, selected no frames and left an empty sample directory behind with a success exit code. That now fails the sample too. Checked on sample videos from several cameras: a clip whose GPX covers a whole drive is placed by its start time, a start time outside the GPX fails loudly, and clips whose GPX was recorded with them sample as before. --- mapillary_tools/exceptions.py | 7 + mapillary_tools/geotag/factory.py | 4 +- .../geotag/geotag_videos_from_gpx.py | 8 +- mapillary_tools/geotag/options.py | 16 ++ .../geotag/video_extractors/gpx.py | 110 +++++++++++- mapillary_tools/sample_video.py | 75 +++++++- tests/integration/test_video_process.py | 108 ++++++++++++ tests/unit/test_gpx_video_sync.py | 161 ++++++++++++++++++ tests/unit/test_sample_video.py | 112 +++++++++++- 9 files changed, 591 insertions(+), 10 deletions(-) create mode 100644 tests/unit/test_gpx_video_sync.py diff --git a/mapillary_tools/exceptions.py b/mapillary_tools/exceptions.py index 5474fd1b..9898db42 100644 --- a/mapillary_tools/exceptions.py +++ b/mapillary_tools/exceptions.py @@ -72,6 +72,13 @@ class MapillaryStationaryVideoError(MapillaryDescriptionError): pass +class MapillaryGPXVideoStartUnknownError(MapillaryDescriptionError): + """ + Nothing says where along a GPX track a video without GPS starts, and the + track is too long to assume that it starts with the video. + """ + + class MapillaryOutsideGPXTrackError(MapillaryDescriptionError): def __init__( self, message: str, image_time: str, gpx_start_time: str, gpx_end_time: str diff --git a/mapillary_tools/geotag/factory.py b/mapillary_tools/geotag/factory.py index 8b8f146d..33f4521c 100644 --- a/mapillary_tools/geotag/factory.py +++ b/mapillary_tools/geotag/factory.py @@ -367,7 +367,9 @@ def _build_video_geotag(option: SourceOption) -> base.GeotagVideosFromGeneric | elif option.source is SourceType.GPX: return geotag_videos_from_gpx.GeotagVideosFromGPX( - Pir Date: Mon, 19 Oct 2026 14:02:58 +0200 Subject: [PATCH 5/9] Apply the interpolation options when sampling by distance video_process registers --interpolation_offset_time and --interpolation_use_gpx_start_time for its geotagging stage, which applies them to the frames, and the README documents both for lining up a GPX with a video. Distance sampling ignored them, and so picked frames by positions along the GPX that the frames did not end up at. With an offset, the geotagging stage moved every frame that many seconds along the track, and pushed frames near its end past it, where they were rejected and failed the command: video_process V.mp4 OUT --video_start_time T --interpolation_offset_time 2 \ --geotag_source gpx --geotag_source_path V.gpx MapillaryProcessError: Failed to process 5 files VideoSyncOption now carries both to the GPX extractor, which applies them as the geotagging stage will. use_gpx_start_time starts the track with the video, whatever the start time says; the user has said that the two started together, so a track much longer than the video is not refused either. The offset shifts the track back, and its absolute times with it, so that a frame is stamped with its capture time and the geotagging stage, adding the offset back, finds the position the frame was picked by. process still ignores both for videos. It sets them on every source, for the images; applying them to a video there would change the track that is uploaded with it, which is a separate decision. For a clip at the end of its GPX with a 2 second offset, the positions the sampler picked frames by and the ones they were geotagged at differed by 16.7 m, and five frames were rejected. Now they agree, and none are. With use_gpx_start_time they can still differ by the composition time of the first frame, since the geotagging stage puts the first sampled frame, not video time 0, at the start of the GPX. --- mapillary_tools/geotag/options.py | 8 +++ .../geotag/video_extractors/gpx.py | 33 ++++++++- mapillary_tools/sample_video.py | 4 ++ tests/integration/test_video_process.py | 68 ++++++++++++++++++ tests/unit/test_gpx_video_sync.py | 71 +++++++++++++++++++ tests/unit/test_sample_video.py | 41 ++++++++++- 6 files changed, 220 insertions(+), 5 deletions(-) diff --git a/mapillary_tools/geotag/options.py b/mapillary_tools/geotag/options.py index 0c04efdf..72f635f3 100644 --- a/mapillary_tools/geotag/options.py +++ b/mapillary_tools/geotag/options.py @@ -158,6 +158,14 @@ class VideoSyncOption: # a GPX by when the video has no GPS of its own to sync it with start_time: float | None = None + # --interpolation_offset_time: seconds the geotagging stage adds to the + # capture time of a frame to find its position along the GPX + offset_time: float = 0.0 + + # --interpolation_use_gpx_start_time: the geotagging stage puts the first + # frame at the start of the GPX + use_gpx_start_time: bool = False + SourceOptionSchema = { "type": "object", diff --git a/mapillary_tools/geotag/video_extractors/gpx.py b/mapillary_tools/geotag/video_extractors/gpx.py index b865564b..fa69b833 100644 --- a/mapillary_tools/geotag/video_extractors/gpx.py +++ b/mapillary_tools/geotag/video_extractors/gpx.py @@ -21,7 +21,7 @@ else: from typing_extensions import override -from ... import exceptions, geo, types, utils +from ... import exceptions, geo, telemetry, types, utils from ...mp4 import construct_mp4_parser as cparser, simple_mp4_parser as sparser from .. import options from ..utils import parse_gpx @@ -63,6 +63,8 @@ def __init__( self.gpx_path = gpx_path self.sync_mode = sync_mode self.video_sync = video_sync + if video_sync is not None and video_sync.use_gpx_start_time: + self.sync_mode = SyncMode.REBASE @override def extract(self) -> types.VideoMetadata: @@ -83,6 +85,7 @@ def extract(self) -> types.VideoMetadata: if self.sync_mode is SyncMode.STRICT_SYNC: raise ex self._place_without_video_gps(gpx_points) + self._apply_offset_time(gpx_points) return types.VideoMetadata( filename=self.video_path, filesize=utils.get_file_size(self.video_path), @@ -105,6 +108,8 @@ def extract(self) -> types.VideoMetadata: ) self._rebase_times(gpx_points, offset=offset) + self._apply_offset_time(gpx_points) + return dataclasses.replace(native_video_metadata, points=gpx_points) def _place_without_video_gps(self, gpx_points: T.Sequence[geo.Point]) -> None: @@ -126,6 +131,26 @@ def _place_without_video_gps(self, gpx_points: T.Sequence[geo.Point]) -> None: self._rebase_times(gpx_points) + def _apply_offset_time(self, gpx_points: T.Sequence[geo.Point]) -> None: + """ + Shift the track back by --interpolation_offset_time, which the + geotagging stage adds to the capture time of a frame to find its + position along the GPX. + + The absolute times shift with the track, so that a frame is stamped + with its capture time, and the geotagging stage, adding the offset back, + finds the position the frame was picked by. + """ + if self.video_sync is None or not self.video_sync.offset_time: + return + + offset_time = self.video_sync.offset_time + for p in gpx_points: + p.time -= offset_time + # parse_gpx() returns CAMMGPSPoint, with epoch_time 0 for no time + if isinstance(p, telemetry.CAMMGPSPoint) and 0 < p.epoch_time: + p.epoch_time -= offset_time + def _check_assumed_start(self, gpx_points: T.Sequence[geo.Point]) -> None: """ Check that the GPX track can have started with the video, as it is @@ -151,7 +176,8 @@ def _check_assumed_start(self, gpx_points: T.Sequence[geo.Point]) -> None: raise exceptions.MapillaryGPXVideoStartUnknownError( f"The GPX track in {self.gpx_path} lasts {_format_duration(gpx_duration)} " f"and the video only {_format_duration(video_duration)}, so the video " - "could start anywhere along the track. GPXVideoExtractor merged the tracks as they came, so the points were out of time order, and distance sampling, which now reads the GPX, crashed in the interpolator with a traceback: ValueError: Expect points to be sorted by time, ... process did not crash, but uploaded the video with all of those points in its track, out of order, 25,250 of them some 55 years before the video. No GPS fix can be timestamped before the GPS epoch, 1980-01-06, so drop those points, with a warning, and sort the rest. Sorting alone would have kept the junk at the start of the track, where --interpolation_use_gpx_start_time would pin the video, and where the check of an assumed start would find a track lasting 55 years. This changes process too, for a GPX with such points or with its tracks out of order. A GPX whose points are in order and after 1980 gives the same track as before. --- .../geotag/video_extractors/gpx.py | 19 +++++- tests/integration/test_video_process.py | 49 ++++++++++++++ tests/unit/test_gpx_video_sync.py | 64 +++++++++++++++++++ 3 files changed, 131 insertions(+), 1 deletion(-) diff --git a/mapillary_tools/geotag/video_extractors/gpx.py b/mapillary_tools/geotag/video_extractors/gpx.py index fa69b833..f07160bb 100644 --- a/mapillary_tools/geotag/video_extractors/gpx.py +++ b/mapillary_tools/geotag/video_extractors/gpx.py @@ -36,6 +36,11 @@ # orders of magnitude. _IMPLAUSIBLE_OFFSET_SECONDS = 24 * 3600 +# No GPS fix can be timestamped before the GPS epoch, 1980-01-06.
