Root Cause Identified

The bug was in CompanionDiscussion.tsx:34. The query key generated for useBackgroundRequest didn't match the query key used by PostComments:

Before (broken):

useBackgroundRequest(
  generateQueryKey(RequestKey.PostComments, null, post?.id), // ["PostComments", null, "post-id"]
);

Expected by PostComments:

generateCommentsQueryKey({ postId: id, sortBy }); // ["PostComments", null, { postId: "post-id", sortBy: undefined }]

The first generates a query key with a string as the third element, while PostComments expects an object with postId and sortBy properties. This mismatch prevented the background request listener from updating the React Query cache when comment data arrived from the background script.

Fix Applied

Updated CompanionDiscussion.tsx to use generateCommentsQueryKey with the correct parameters:

useBackgroundRequest(
  generateCommentsQueryKey({ postId: post?.id, sortBy: undefined }),
);

This ensures the query key matches what PostComments expects, allowing comments to load properly in the companion.

  • Updated the useBackgroundRequest call to use the correct query key format
