This occurs when building the sealed variant for testing with just variant=composefs-sealeduki-sdboot test-tmt

Investing further, the issue seems to be at

Need to debug a bit more

I put up #1980 as a first step to gather more context, try that and then once it breaks we can keep iterating and chasing how it's getting down into read_directory as you posted above. Then at the very least we'll have some useful context additions to merge so the next time we hit something in the same area we'll be better off :)

Seems like an issue with creating a tempfile

Volume mounting /var/tmp fixes this

I think this happens due to fuse-overlayfs as it does not happen for me as root using overlay.

Adding --mount=type=tmpfs,target=/var/tmp worked around it indeed.
