VNF Template For a Fortigate

Hi All,

I am having an issue trying to make a Fortigate VNF template for VMWare. Fortinet provides the appliance as an ovf and 2 vmdks. 1vmdk for the OS and the other vmdk is for a data drive.

I'm not sure how I would import the OVF and 2 VMDKs into cloudstack to deploy since cloudstack can only use OVA for VMWare?

I've tried the below:

1. Deploying the OVF and 2 vmdks directly to vcenter. This works and the appliance boots as expected.
2. Using ovftool to convert the OVF to OVA. This will convert fine and I can deploy it directly to vcenter as well. But when deploying in CS the instance will deploy but won't boot. I checked in vmware and both disks are imported as well as the boot mode is BIOS which is the same as when importing directly to VMware. Also the SCSI controller is correct as LSI Log Parallel in both vmware and CS.

So I'm not sure if anyone has gotten a Fortigate VNF to deploy properly on cloudstack?

There is support for deploying Virtual Appliances from cloudstack

@kiranchavala Hi I understand there is support for VNF appliances but I am asking if anyone has gotten a Fortigate VM to deploy successfully? The OVA works fine if deployed via VCenter but using Cloudstack the VM will not boot.

can you share more information of the error ?

@justinestruch , OVA are an oracle owned spec and is hard to follow as an open source project. We’ve encountered many “features” over the years that needed extra work.

That said, did you get around you problems? i.e. can we close this?
If not it might work to install on vmware and import or “manage” in cloudstack.
