Linear LED Pattern

[PREFACE] I’m building this circuit to have a cool visual effect every time you open the switch.

5/15/2026 - Project Research

Today I made time to research and comb through the Intro To Electronics guide to make sure I have a good understanding of RC timing. And I found lots of interest an primary example for RC timing shown here:

And I decided to use this concept to create a pattern of LEDs that turn on at the same time but turn off sequentially.

As for how I wanted to sequence to act, I thought about films where street lights turn off one by one as the protagonist goes down a street to give a feeling of suspense or mystery. I wanted to replicate this process as an LED pattern where each LED turns off as you move down the circuit.

5/16/2026 - Project Complete

To create this project and really make it come alive. I used the concept in the RC Timing example and upscaled that to 5 LEDs. But to get to my final result shown here:

I needed to constantly change the resistance amounts of each pair of resistors to make sure the progressive deactivation of LEDs operates smoothly when I open the switch. So I noticed a principle that basically just told me:

Higher resistance = Longer duration after turned off

And this helped a lot with building up my circuit.

Time Spent: 3 Hours (I didn’t realize I wasn’t lapsing my time until the last 20 minutes of it; I won’t make this mistake again)
