make fails on OpenSUSE Tumbleweed 20260209

Describe the bug
The make step in the compilation instructions fails with the following error:
xml_writer.c:332:9: error: ISO C90 forbids mixed declarations and code [-Werror=declaration-after-statement] 332 | int retry_count = 0; | ^~~

To Reproduce
Steps to reproduce the behavior:

1. While running OpenSUSE Tumbleweed 20260209 clone the repository
2. Install all dependencies
3. run make after running both autoconf.sh and config

Expected behavior
make should successfully build the binaries

Desktop (please complete the following information):

• OS: OpenSUSE Tumbleweed 20260209
• Kernel: 6.18.9-1-default

Another thing I've noticed when telling make to ignore all errors is that there seem to be quite a few files exhibiting the same ISO C90 error.
