How to Create Wind Waker Hack on Japanese GameCube?

I had a bit of trouble creating an NTSC-J hacked game save card.

You must FORMAT THE CARD on a Japanese console - or restore from a Japanese-formatted card.

How to format the card:

• Get a JPN-formatted raw image - jpn_empty_memory_card.zip
• Format with GCMM
• Format in the JPN GameCube BIOS
  • I can't read Japanese, but the prompt asks "Do you want to format this card?" and "No" is selected. Hit up to select Yes, and then again when it asks the similar "Are you sure?" message.
  • Top is Yes, Bottom is Cancel

This appears to be the recipe for success:

1. Format the card with GCMM, on a Japanese console
2. Restore boot.gci FIRST
3. Restore gzlj.gci AFTER

Alternatively:

1. Create a Wind Waker (Japan) game save on the card
2. Overwrite the game save with gzlj.gci

You can use the RAW Restore feature of GCMM to create fresh, region-formatted cards with these images:

Note: this method will only work on 3rd party cards. 1st party cards are locked by serial number.
