BW16 (RTL8720DN) boots successfully but shows “Sorry! You can’t use NETHERCAP on this device”

I’m using a SparkFun BW16 (RTL8720DN) with NETHERCAP.

The firmware flashes successfully and boots, but after startup the OLED displays:

“Sorry! You can’t use NETHERCAP on this device.”

Also, the NETHERCAP Wi-Fi SSID is created and visible, but I’m unable to connect to it from my phone or laptop.

Hardware:

• SparkFun BW16 (RTL8720DN)
• SSD1306 I2C OLED

Could you please confirm:

• Is the SparkFun BW16 officially supported?
• Is this caused by a firmware compatibility/licensing check or a board-specific issue?
• Is there a different firmware build required for this board?
